Tahajjud time tonight

Tahajjud is the voluntary prayer of the night, after Isha and before Fajr. Many pray it in the last third of the night: the time the Prophet ﷺ said Allah descends to the nearest heaven, answering those who call on Him and forgiving those who ask (Sahih al-Bukhari 1145).

How the last third of the night is worked out

The night is counted from Maghrib (sunset) to Fajr (dawn), as the Arabic lexicon al-Misbah al-Munir defines it. Divide that time into three, and the last third begins one third of it before Fajr (Ustadh Fadi Qutub Zada). Because the night is longer in winter and shorter in summer, the time moves through the year.

How Tahajjud is prayed

The Prophet ﷺ said the night prayer is prayed two rakats at a time, and that someone who fears dawn is near should pray one rakat as Witr to end it (Sahih al-Bukhari 990). He said to make Witr the last prayer of the night (Sahih al-Bukhari 998).

Aisha said the Prophet ﷺ never prayed more than eleven rakats at night, in Ramadan or any other month (Sahih al-Bukhari 1147).
