How Jummah is prayed

The imam gives the khutbah, then leads the congregation in 2 rakats. ‘Umar described the Friday prayer as two rakats (Sunan an-Nasa’i 1420), and the Prophet ﷺ prayed it when the sun had passed its highest point, in Dhuhr’s time (Sahih al-Bukhari 904).

Sunnah before and after

After Jummah, the Prophet ﷺ told those who had prayed it to pray four rakats (Sahih Muslim 881), and he himself prayed two at home (Sahih al-Bukhari 937). Schools count the sunnah before and after Jummah differently, so ask your imam what yours teaches.

Who prays Jummah

The Prophet ﷺ said Jummah in congregation is a duty on every Muslim except four: a slave, a woman, a child and someone who is ill (Sunan Abi Dawud 1067). Scholars also hold that it isn’t required of travellers (IslamQA 142713).

Anyone who doesn’t pray Jummah prays Dhuhr instead, as usual (IslamQA 79667). A woman who attends prays Jummah with the congregation, and it takes the place of Dhuhr for her.

Getting ready

The Prophet ﷺ told those coming to Jummah to take a bath (ghusl) first (Sahih al-Bukhari 877). He also spoke of an hour on Friday when a Muslim who is praying and asks Allah for something is given it (Sahih al-Bukhari 935).
