Why the date isn’t certain yet

Each Islamic month begins with the new crescent moon. Some communities begin Ramadan by calculation and announce it in advance; others wait for the crescent to be seen on the evening before. So the first day can differ by a day between masjids, even in one city.

Why Ramadan is earlier every year

The Islamic calendar follows the moon, and its year is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, so Ramadan comes about 11 days earlier each time. It began on February 18 in 2026, and is expected around January 28 in 2028.

Ramadan with your family

Children aren’t required to fast until they reach puberty, and many families let younger ones practice with part of a day, or a few days in the month. Iftar brings everyone home at the same time, which makes Maghrib, prayed just after, a good prayer to pray together. Our free Ramadan calendar for kids gives children a small good deed for each day, with a prayer tracker for the whole family.
