Why are my masjid’s times different?

Fajr and Isha depend on the method: methods differ on how dark the sky must be. This page uses the Moonsighting Committee method, as the Raka app does in North America. Google and many sites use ISNA: around New York its Fajr is 8–16 minutes later than this page’s all year, and Isha can differ by up to about 25 minutes either way, depending on the season.

Masjids also post iqamah times: when the congregation starts, usually some minutes after the times shown here.

Which calculation method should I pick?

The one your masjid uses: its timetable usually says. In North America many use the Moonsighting Committee method or ISNA. Tap Change, under today’s times, to switch between them and compare.

In the Raka app you can pick your masjid’s method and Asr timing, and move any prayer up to 30 minutes earlier or later to match its timetable exactly.

What is Hanafi Asr?

The Hanafi school starts Asr later: when an object’s shadow reaches twice its length rather than once, beyond the shadow it had at noon. If your masjid follows it, tap Change under today’s times and choose Hanafi Asr.

What is today’s Islamic date?

Today is 1 Jumada al-Ula 1448 by the Umm al-Qura calendar. Islamic months begin with the new moon, so your masjid’s date, by local moon sighting, can be a day different.

What time is Jummah in the Bronx?

Jummah is prayed in Dhuhr’s time on Fridays, in congregation, in place of Dhuhr. Each masjid sets its own khutbah time, so check with yours.

Does this page use my location?

No. The times are calculated for the Bronx itself, so the page never asks where you are. The Raka app works the same way on your iPhone: your location is used on the phone only, to work out prayer times, and never leaves it.
